The Hulk, as portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is the alter ego of Dr. Bruce Banner, a brilliant scientist specializing in gamma radiation. Banner's transformation into the Hulk occurs after a lab accident involving gamma radiation exposure. This transformation results in a massive, green-skinned humanoid possessing immense strength and durability.

The MCU Hulk, while sharing core traits with his comic book counterpart, has a slightly different trajectory. Initially, Banner struggles to control his transformations, viewing the Hulk as a destructive force. Over time, particularly after the events of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Banner begins to exert more control, leading to the "Professor Hulk" persona seen later in the franchise. "Professor Hulk" is a merging of Banner's intellect and the Hulk's strength and physical form.

The Hulk first appeared in the MCU in the 2008 film, *The Incredible Hulk*, portrayed by Edward Norton. He was later recast with Mark Ruffalo assuming the role, beginning with 2012's *The Avengers*. The MCU Hulk's character arc encompasses themes of self-acceptance, control, and the responsibility that comes with immense power.
